11 terms.
- QNAME minimization
A resolver technique, defined in RFC 7816, that sends upstream servers only as much of the queried name as they need, to reduce what each server learns about the client.
Like I'm five Only telling each helper the part of the question it needs to answer.
- QPACK
The header compression format for HTTP/3, defined in RFC 9204. Like HPACK it uses tables of previously seen fields, but it is designed so that streams arriving out of order do not block each other.
Like I'm five A shorthand for the labels on web messages that still works when messages arrive in a jumbled order.
Used in RFC 9114
- QR Code
A two-dimensional machine-readable barcode that encodes data in a square pattern of black and white pixels, scannable by cameras on phones and other devices.
Like I'm five A square picture that your phone can read to get information.
- Quality of Experience
How satisfied a user is with a network service, often expressed as a rating or computed from network metrics like speed, latency, and packet loss.
Like I'm five How happy a person feels when they use the internet, based on how fast it loads and how smooth it feels.
- Quality of Service (QoS)
A set of techniques that prioritize certain types of traffic (such as voice or video) to ensure they receive predictable, timely delivery even when the network is busy.
Like I'm five Making sure important traffic like phone calls gets through quickly, even if the network is crowded.
- Quality of Service (QoS)
Treating some traffic better than other traffic, for example by delivering it faster or ahead of others in a queue. RFC 2549 parodies this with service levels named after airline classes.
Like I'm five Letting some messages skip to the front of the line.
Used in RFC 545 RFC 795 RFC 905 RFC 1046 RFC 1077 RFC 1152 RFC 1190 RFC 1193 RFC 1221 RFC 1287 RFC 1346 RFC 1349 RFC 1363 RFC 1453 RFC 1458 RFC 1633 RFC 1636 RFC 1667 RFC 1677 RFC 1678 RFC 1679 RFC 1680 RFC 1682 RFC 1693 and 215 more
- Querier
The single multicast router on a link that is elected to send the periodic and specific queries. Other routers listen and can take over if it fails.
Like I'm five The one router that does the asking while the others just listen.
- Queuing delay
The extra time a packet spends waiting in a queue at a router. It can be estimated as the current delay minus the delay when no queue exists.
Like I'm five The time spent waiting in line before your turn.
- QUIC
A general-purpose transport protocol defined in RFC 9000. It runs over UDP and provides reliable, encrypted, multiplexed streams, with TLS 1.3 built into its handshake.
Like I'm five A new way for computers to talk that is fast, secret and sturdy.
Used in RFC 8470 RFC 8546 RFC 8558 RFC 8744 RFC 8899 RFC 8922 RFC 8999 RFC 9000 RFC 9001 RFC 9002 RFC 9065 RFC 9075 RFC 9095 RFC 9114 RFC 9204 RFC 9221 RFC 9250 RFC 9258 RFC 9287 RFC 9292 RFC 9297 RFC 9298 RFC 9308 RFC 9312 and 18 more
- QUIC stream
A lightweight, ordered sequence of bytes within a QUIC connection. Streams can be bidirectional or unidirectional, are opened simply by sending data on a new stream ID, and are delivered independently of one another.
Like I'm five One lane in a many-lane road, with its own traffic.
- Quoted-printable
A MIME encoding for mostly-ASCII data in which unsafe octets are written as = followed by two uppercase hex digits and a trailing = marks a soft line break.
Like I'm five Leave normal letters alone and write only the strange ones as a code.
Used in RFC 1341 RFC 1342 RFC 1521 RFC 1522 RFC 1554 RFC 1555 RFC 1557 RFC 1767 RFC 1844 RFC 1847 RFC 1947 RFC 2015 RFC 2045 RFC 2047 RFC 2048 RFC 2049 RFC 2157 RFC 2646 RFC 2854 RFC 3030 RFC 3156 RFC 3676 RFC 4289 RFC 5137 and 2 more
