- jCard
The JSON format for vCard, defined in RFC 7095. It carries the same data as vCard but written as JSON arrays.
Like I'm five A vCard rewritten so web programs can read it easily.
Used in RFC 7095 RFC 8688 RFC 9083 RFC 9536 RFC 9537 RFC 9555 RFC 9795 RFC 9796
- JID (Jabber ID)
An XMPP address of the form
localpart@domainpart/resourcepart, for examplejuliet@im.example.com/balcony. Without the resource it is a bare JID. The format is defined in RFC 6122.Like I'm five Your chat address: a name, a server, and which of your devices you are using.
Used in RFC 3920 RFC 3921 RFC 3922 RFC 3923 RFC 6120 RFC 6121 RFC 7247 RFC 7572 RFC 7573 RFC 7622 RFC 7702
- Jitter
Variation in packet arrival delay. RTCP receiver reports include an estimate of interarrival jitter.
Like I'm five Pieces of a call arriving at uneven times, like a dripping tap.
Used in RFC 1193 RFC 1257 RFC 1305 RFC 1589 RFC 1667 RFC 1819 RFC 1889 RFC 1890 RFC 2212 RFC 2215 RFC 2250 RFC 2381 RFC 2679 RFC 2681 RFC 2724 RFC 2736 RFC 3095 RFC 3246 RFC 3247 RFC 3366 RFC 3393 RFC 3432 RFC 3550 RFC 3611 and 117 more
- Jitter buffer
A holding area where arriving packets wait briefly before play out, so that uneven arrival times do not disturb a steady stream.
Like I'm five A waiting room that lets late and early parcels line up so they come out at an even pace.
- JMAP
The JSON Meta Application Protocol, a generic protocol for synchronising data such as mail, calendars or contacts between a client and a server.
Like I'm five A shared language that lets your apps and a server agree on what has changed.
Used in RFC 8621 RFC 8887 RFC 9007 RFC 9404 RFC 9425 RFC 9610 RFC 9661
- Job Template attribute
An optional setting a client supplies when creating a print job, such as the number of copies, sides or media. A Printer that supports one also publishes a matching default and supported-values attribute.
Like I'm five One of the choices on a print dialog, like how many copies you want.
- Joe Job
A reputation attack where an attacker sends unsolicited bulk email on behalf of a target domain or user to harm their reputation and trust.
Like I'm five When someone sends spam pretending to be you to make you look bad.
- JSContact
A JSON data model and format for contact cards, defined in RFC 9553 as an alternative to vCard and jCard.
Like I'm five An address card written in the JSON style that web programs like.
- JSON
JavaScript Object Notation: a text format for structured data built from objects, arrays, strings, numbers, true, false and null.
Like I'm five A way of writing labelled lists that every computer can read.
Used in RFC 4627 RFC 6208 RFC 6415 RFC 6839 RFC 6901 RFC 6902 RFC 7033 RFC 7047 RFC 7049 RFC 7071 RFC 7072 RFC 7095 RFC 7158 RFC 7159 RFC 7165 RFC 7265 RFC 7285 RFC 7373 RFC 7386 RFC 7396 RFC 7464 RFC 7480 RFC 7483 RFC 7484 and 144 more
- JSON Pointer
A string syntax, defined in RFC 6901, that names one specific part of a JSON document using slash-separated keys and array indices.
Like I'm five An address that points to one exact spot inside a document.
- JSON Web Encryption (JWE)
A JSON-based format for encrypted content, defined in RFC 7516. A JWT can be wrapped in a JWE to keep its claims secret.
Like I'm five A sealed envelope with a lock, so only the right person can read the note inside.
- JSON Web Key (JWK)
A JSON data structure that represents a cryptographic key, with fields such as the key type and the key material.
Like I'm five A key written down as a labelled list in a common text format.
- JSONPath
A query language for pointing at values inside a JSON document, for example a path that starts at the root and selects an entity's handle. It is defined in RFC 9535.
Like I'm five A set of directions that tells you exactly where in a big document a piece of information sits.
- Jumbogram
An IPv6 packet whose payload is longer than 65,535 octets. It uses the Jumbo Payload option to carry the length.
Like I'm five A giant package that is too big for the normal size label.
- Junction
A point in a fileset where another fileset can be attached. A file server that reaches one must be able to find the FSN of the target fileset.
Like I'm five A signpost in a folder that says the rest of the stuff is somewhere else.
- JWK Thumbprint
A URL-safe representation of a hash computed over a JSON Web Key. It gives a compact identifier for a key and is defined in RFC 7638.
Like I'm five A short fingerprint that stands for a key.
- JWS (JSON Web Signature)
A standard format for a JSON message together with a digital signature. ACME requests are signed this way with the account key.
Like I'm five A letter with a seal that proves who sent it.
