- Z39.50
An international library search protocol standard for searching and retrieving information from remote databases. WAIS was based on Z39.50-1988.
Like I'm five An old standard for searching library databases over the internet.
- Zero Touch Provisioning
Automatic discovery and configuration of network nodes without manual setup. In RIFT, nodes automatically determine their level and peers based on protocol messages alone.
Like I'm five Routers figure out their place in the network by themselves without someone setting them up by hand.
- Zero-Knowledge Proof
A cryptographic proof that convinces a verifier that a statement is true without revealing any information beyond that fact. The prover can demonstrate knowledge of a secret without disclosing the secret itself.
Like I'm five Proof that you know something without telling what it is, like proving you can open a safe without showing the combination.
- Zone
A portion of the DNS namespace managed as a unit by one authority, such as example.com, possibly with delegations to child zones.
Like I'm five One section of the phone book that one person looks after.
Used in RFC 920 RFC 973 RFC 1033 RFC 1279 RFC 1706 RFC 1816 RFC 1982 RFC 1995 RFC 1996 RFC 2010 RFC 2136 RFC 2137 RFC 2182 RFC 2317 RFC 2672 RFC 2782 RFC 2870 RFC 2916 RFC 3007 RFC 3008 RFC 3026 RFC 3152 RFC 3172 RFC 3364 and 55 more
- Zone
A part of the domain name space that is administered as a unit and served by its own authoritative name servers. A zone can delegate subdomains to other zones.
Like I'm five One page of the phone book that one office is in charge of.
Used in RFC 882 RFC 883 RFC 1031 RFC 1032 RFC 1034 RFC 1035 RFC 1183 RFC 1296 RFC 1480 RFC 1611 RFC 1713 RFC 1912 RFC 2010 RFC 2065 RFC 2517 RFC 2535 RFC 3008 RFC 3090 RFC 3375 RFC 3403 RFC 3833 RFC 4472 RFC 4592 RFC 4641 and 8 more
- Zone cut
The point in the DNS tree where authority passes from a parent zone to a child zone, marked by NS records in the parent. DNSSEC lets NSEC and DS records sit on the parent side of it.
Like I'm five The line on the map where one office's area ends and the next begins.
Used in RFC 2136 RFC 2181 RFC 3658 RFC 4035 RFC 4592 RFC 4956 RFC 5936 RFC 6672 RFC 6840 RFC 7477 RFC 8020 RFC 8499 RFC 9156 RFC 9471 RFC 9499 RFC 9615 RFC 9704 RFC 9803 RFC 10029
- Zone identifier
A text label, usually an interface name such as eth0, that says which network link a scoped IPv6 address belongs to. It is meaningful only on the node where it is defined.
Like I'm five The name of the cable or street that tells the computer which one an address is on.
- Zone index
A number that selects an interface when the same scoped Internet address can appear in more than one zone on a device that connects several zones.
Like I'm five A room number that says which of several identical-looking hallways you mean.
- Zone signing key (ZSK)
A key whose private half signs the zone's data. It is usually in the same DNSKEY RRset as the KSK and may be changed more often.
Like I'm five The everyday key used to sign the answers.
Used in RFC 2137 RFC 3757 RFC 4033 RFC 5702 RFC 6781 RFC 6841 RFC 7344 RFC 7583 RFC 8078 RFC 8483 RFC 8499 RFC 8901
