Who Talks TCP?
The list of hosts was taken from the NIC hostname table of 2-Dec-82.
The tests were run on 22-Dec-82 from ~12:01 pm to ~8:30 pm PST.
Dead, refused, and unreachable hosts were retried 24-Dec-82 from ~3:50 pm
to ~5:15 pm PST.
Claims are taken from the NIC host table:
T = tcp (no particular services mentioned)
t = tcp/telnet
f = tcp/ftp
s = tcp/smtp

§1What Was Tested and When
RFC 834 is a survey, not a protocol. Its list of hosts was taken from the NIC hostname table of 2-Dec-82. The tests were run on 22-Dec-82 from about 12:01 pm to about 8:30 pm PST. Hosts that were dead, refused or unreachable were tried again on 24-Dec-82 from about 3:50 pm to about 5:15 pm PST.
The question is practical: of the hosts that claim to support a service in the NIC table, and of those that claim nothing, which ones really accept a TCP connection for Telnet, FTP and SMTP?
It is like checking a list of shops to see which ones are really open, instead of trusting the sign on the door.
§2Claims and Results
Each host's claims come from the NIC host table and are shown as four letters: T for tcp with no particular services mentioned, t for tcp/telnet, f for tcp/ftp and s for tcp/smtp.
The results for each service are one of: blank (not accepted), refused, unreachable, dead, accepted, or accepted+. The last means FTP allowed user anonymous with password guest.
The claim is what a host says about itself. The result is what happened when someone actually knocked.
§3The Summary Tables
There is one summary table per service. Rows split the hosts by what they claimed (tcp/telnet, tcp, or nothing), and columns by result. All three tables cover the same 314 hosts.
- Telnet: 102 hosts accepted a connection. Of the 130 hosts claiming tcp/telnet, 73 accepted.
- FTP: 80 hosts accepted or accepted+. Of the 107 claiming tcp/ftp, 50 did.
- SMTP: 82 hosts accepted. Of the 96 claiming tcp/smtp, 56 did.
Some hosts that claimed nothing in the NIC table still accepted connections, and some that claimed a service were dead or unreachable, so the claims are only a rough guide.
The tables count how many doors opened, how many stayed shut and how many houses nobody could find.

§4The Per-Host Listing
The rest of the RFC is a table in alphabetical order by host name. Each row gives the host name, its address (for example 10.2.0.54), its claims, and its Telnet, FTP and SMTP results. A blank result means the service was not accepted. Some rows show d e a d or u n r e a c h a b l e spread across the columns. The listing ends with hosts such as ndre1, which accepted all three services with FTP marked accepted+, and two clarksburg hosts that were unreachable.
After the counts comes the full guest book: one line per computer saying what happened when it was knocked on.
§5Place in the Series
This is one report in a series of surveys by the same author. It supersedes the earlier report, RFC 833. The metadata lists RFC 835 as the report that obsoletes it. Because it records one test run, its figures describe a few days in December 1982 and nothing more.
It is one photograph of the network on one day, and a newer photograph replaced it.
