PROBLEMNetwork operators wanted a regular record of how much traffic each Host put onto the network.
MECHANISMBBN attached a table of packets output per Host for February 1973, split into internode, intranode and total counts, with a daily average of internode packets.
STATUS TODAYThe report notes that data for days 7 and 8 was missing, and RFC 497 later updated it.

§1A Monthly Traffic Report

RFC 482 is a short cover note from A. McKenzie of BBN-NET, dated 12 March 1973. It says that the attached tables are the Host traffic statistics for the month of February 1973, and it updates RFC 455.

The attachment is titled Host Throughput Summary (Packets Output). It states that data is missing for days 7 and 8.

This is a cover letter on top of a big scoreboard of how busy each computer on the network was.

§2Reading the Table

Each Host gets a row, and Hosts that share a site are added up beneath it. Columns give internode packets, intranode packets and the total. The last two columns are the average daily internode packets and the number of days counted, which is 26 for every site shown.

For example, UCLA Host 1 output 317437 internode and 34933 intranode packets, for 352370 in total. Site totals for UCLA are 1375723 internode packets, 98473 intranode and 1474196 in all, with an average of 52912 internode packets per day.

Each line says how many messages a computer sent to other places and how many stayed at home, then adds them up.

§3Network Totals

The closing lines give network-wide figures: a total of 41692800 internode and 8543434 intranode packets, a daily average of 1603569 internode and 328594 intranode, and an average per node-day of 45816 and 9388.

The report also gives a ratio of packets to messages (internode) of 1.07. One site, BELV, is listed as having had no traffic.

At the bottom everything is added together, so you can see how busy the whole network was.
