§1What the Report Is
RFC 455, by A. McKenzie of BBN, is a cover note attaching the Host traffic statistics for January 1973. The attachment is titled Host Throughput Summary, measured in packets output.
Each host is listed under its site name, such as UCLA, SRI, BBN or ISI, with its host number.
It is a table of how many messages each computer sent in January.
§2How to Read the Table
Columns give internode packets (sent to other nodes), intranode packets (within the same node), the total, the average daily internode figure, and the number of days counted. Sites with several hosts show a subtotal line.
Most sites list 31 days. FNWC shows 9 days and PATRK shows 13. TINK and BELV are noted as having no traffic.
Some messages go to other places and some stay at home. The table counts both and says how many days were counted.
§3The Totals
The bottom of the table gives a total of 45115060 internode and 10456530 intranode packets. The daily averages are 1455325 internode and 337308 intranode, and the average per node-day is 41928 and 9718 respectively. The packets-to-messages ratio for internode traffic is given as 1.05.
ISI Host 2 shows the largest average daily internode figure listed, 212744, and AMES2 follows at 152265. Some printed rows look inconsistent with their neighbours, so treat individual figures with care.
All the computers together sent a very big number of messages, and the table adds them up and finds the average per day.
