BBN IMP (#5) AND NCC SCHEDULE MARCH 4, 1971

On Saturday morning, March 4, 1972, at 0800 EST the BBN IMP (#5)
will go off the air to allow for a move of the equipment to a
new location in BBN's facilities. The NCC telephone and operators
will be available as usual during this period. We hope to have
the IMP back on the Network by early Saturday afternoon; the
choice of Saturday morning was made intentionally so that if by
some stroke of fate all our wideband lines stay down longer than
anticipated, the impact on others in the network will be minimized.
We anticipate that all other sites will operate normally through
   this period.

Shortly subsequent to this move, a new Host will be connected to
the net. This is a PDP-1D at BBN which will be used for certain
additional NCC functions. It will not be a Server site. We
prefer the Host name "BBN-1D"; its network address will be 197.

PROBLEMBBN's network equipment needed to be relocated but the operation had to minimize disruption to ARPANET users.
MECHANISMBBN announced a scheduled maintenance window on Saturday morning to move the IMP number 5 to a new location, with a commitment to restore service by the afternoon and to add a new host (BBN-1D) afterward.
PLANNED INFRASTRUCTURE UPDATEBy scheduling the maintenance on a weekend morning, impact on network users was minimized, and a new host was added to support additional Network Control Center functions.

§1IMP 5 Maintenance Schedule

BBN announced that on Saturday morning, March 4, 1972, at 8:00 AM EST, their IMP number 5 would go off the network to allow relocation of the equipment to a new facility within BBN. The Network Control Center telephone and operators would remain available during this period. The team aimed to restore the IMP to the network by early Saturday afternoon.

One of the network boxes will be turned off Saturday morning so it can be moved to a new room in the building.

§2Minimizing Impact

The choice of Saturday morning was made intentionally to minimize network impact. If unexpected delays caused the lines to stay down longer than anticipated, the effect on other sites would be reduced compared to a weekday outage. All other sites were expected to operate normally during this period, with only BBN IMP number 5 offline.

They picked Saturday morning so that if something goes wrong, fewer people working on the network will be affected.

§3Adding a New Host

Shortly after the move, BBN would connect a new host to the network: a PDP-1D minicomputer that would assist with Network Control Center functions. The host would be named BBN-1D and would have network address 197. It would not function as a server site but would provide additional computational resources for NCC operations.

After the move is done, a new computer called BBN-1D will be connected to help run the network control office.
