Updates to NETCONF Transport Port Numbers

Abstract

This document releases IANA-assigned port numbers for services
related to the Network Configuration Protocol (NETCONF) that have not
been in use in production networks.

1. Introduction

The "Service Name and Transport Protocol Port Number Registry"
[IANA-SERVICE] records several NETCONF-related port and service name
assignments such as 830 for NETCONF over Secure Shell (SSH)
[RFC6242], 831 for NETCONF over the Blocks Extensible Exchange
Protocol (BEEP) [RFC4744], 832 for NETCONF over the Simple Object
Access Protocol (SOAP) [RFC4743], 4334 for NETCONF Call Home
[RFC8071], and 6513 for NETCONF over Transport Layer Security (TLS)
   [RFC7589][NETCONF-over-TLS].

However, three of these assignments (831, 832, and 833) are for
protocols that are not deployed, and the relevant RFCs ([RFC4743] and
[RFC4744]) have been marked Historic. All these assignments are thus
no longer required to support these services.

This document de-assigns these unused port numbers.

Consistent with Section 8.2 of [RFC6335], this document does not de-
assign service names; only port numbers are de-assigned for better
   usage of available scarce resources.

2. Operational Considerations

There are no known implementations and deployments of protocols that
rely upon the port numbers released back by this document.

Existing configurations (if any) that associate the released port
numbers with the service names "netconf-beep" and "netconfsoaphttp"
need to be reassessed and updated according to the actions in
   Section 4.

Other than that, there are no new operations or manageability
   requirements introduced by this document.

3. Security Considerations

This document does not describe any protocol. As such, this document
does not introduce any new security vulnerability.

4. IANA Considerations

Per this document, IANA has updated the "Service Name and Transport
Protocol Port Number Registry" [IANA-SERVICE] as specified in the
   following subsections.

De-assigned allocations are marked per Section 8.2 of [RFC6335].
These actions are not repeated here.

PROBLEMThree NETCONF-related port numbers (831, 832 and 833) stayed assigned to protocols that are not deployed and whose RFCs have been marked Historic.
MECHANISMIANA de-assigns the port numbers for NETCONF over BEEP and NETCONF over SOAP, adds notes to the ports, and keeps the service names.
WHY IT MATTERSThe three port numbers are released for other uses. The RFC knows of no implementations or deployments that rely on them.

§1Ports That Were Never Used

The IANA Service Name and Transport Protocol Port Number Registry lists several NETCONF-related assignments: 830 for NETCONF over SSH, 831 for NETCONF over BEEP, 832 for NETCONF over SOAP, 4334 for NETCONF Call Home, and 6513 for NETCONF over TLS.

Three of these (831, 832 and 833) are for protocols that are not deployed, and the relevant RFCs, RFC 4743 and RFC 4744, have been marked Historic. This document de-assigns those port numbers.

Three reserved spots were for things nobody ever built. They are being handed back.

§4The Registry Changes

For NETCONF over BEEP, the netconf-beep entries on port 831 (tcp and udp) lose their port number and transport. For NETCONF over SOAP, the netconfsoaphttp entries on port 832 and the netconfsoapbeep entries on port 833 (tcp and udp) lose theirs. The references now include RFC 9900.

A note is added to each of the three ports saying it used to be assigned to the respective service but was released by RFC 9900. Following Section 8.2 of RFC 6335, service names are not de-assigned. Only the port numbers are, for better use of scarce resources.

The name tags stay on the list, but the parking spot numbers are erased and can go to someone new.

PORTS RELEASED BY RFC 9900
  • 831netconf-beep — NETCONF over BEEP (RFC 4744), tcp and udp.
  • 832netconfsoaphttp — NETCONF for SOAP over HTTPS (RFC 4743), tcp and udp.
  • 833netconfsoapbeep — NETCONF for SOAP over BEEP (RFC 4743), tcp and udp.

§2Operational and Security Notes

There are no known implementations or deployments of protocols that rely on the released ports. Any existing configurations that tie them to the service names netconf-beep and netconfsoaphttp need to be reassessed and updated.

The document describes no protocol, so it introduces no new security vulnerability.

Nobody was using those spots, so nothing breaks. If someone did write them down somewhere, they should update their notes.
