§1The Reference Card
RFC 496 announces the TNLS Quick Reference Card, a portable guide for users of the terminal-based Online System. The card documents all basic commands needed for everyday work and special-purpose features. It includes TIP settings for reaching SRI-ARC over the network, basic TENEX/EXECUTIVE operating system commands, and a comprehensive set of VIEWSPECS codes.
A quick card was made with the most common commands people needed to use a network program.
§2VIEWSPECS and Display Control
VIEWSPECS are codes that control how the Online System displays information on the terminal screen. These codes let users customize the appearance of output and are crucial to effective use of NLS. TNLS users depend on viewspec codes to format data the way they need it for different tasks and preferences.
Special codes let you change how text looked on your terminal screen, so you could see information the way you wanted.
§3Distribution and Availability
The quick reference card was distributed to all network sites through their station agents. Each site received one copy initially, with additional copies available on request from Marcia Keeney at SRI-ARC. Users could request as many copies as needed for their site. The card was designed to fit in a pocket or be posted at a terminal for quick lookup during work.
Everyone got one card in the mail, and more were available if they asked for them.
