IMP/TIP Memory Retrofit Schedule (Revision 2)

This revision contains two types of changes to RFC #447. First, the
retrofits to Utah, Belvoir, NOAA, USC, Stanford, ISI, Case, and CCA have
been completed and are therefore removed from the schedule. Second, the
retrofits to UCSB, ETAC, Aberdeen, and Rome have been rescheduled.

The revised text of RFC #447 follows:

During the first several months of 1973 we will be retrofitting each IMP
and TIP with additional core memory. At the end of the retrofit
program, the memory sizes of the various machines will be as follows:

    IMP (516 or 316) - 16K words

    TIP - 28K words

TIP with Magnetic Tape Option - 32K words

In addition, the expansion of the TIP core memory will necessitate
enlarging the TIP to two cabinets.

Listed below is the schedule for the remaining retrofits. We have
arranged this schedule to coincide with the usual monthly Preventive
Maintenance at each site so as to minimize user inconvenience, but the
work required will frequently require the machines to be down longer
than normal. I will issue additional RFC's updating this schedule as
necessary.

Any site which anticipates difficulty with the expansion of TIP size,
and thus the floor space requirement, should contact Hawley Rising (BBN)

PROBLEMBBN was adding core memory to every IMP and TIP and needed sites to know when their machine would be down for the upgrade.
MECHANISMThe note restates the plan from RFC 447, removes the sites already finished, reschedules a few others and lists the remaining dates.
STATUS TODAYIt is a short-lived operational schedule, and it replaces RFC 447.

§1What Changed in This Revision

This is the second revision of the memory retrofit schedule first given in RFC 447. It makes two kinds of change. The retrofits at Utah, Belvoir, NOAA, USC, Stanford, ISI, Case and CCA are done and are removed. The retrofits at UCSB, ETAC, Aberdeen and Rome are rescheduled.

The rest of the note repeats the revised text of RFC 447.

Some sites already got their upgrade, so they are crossed off, and a few dates moved.

§2The Memory Retrofit Plan

During the first several months of 1973, BBN retrofits each IMP and TIP with additional core memory. When the program ends, the machines will have these sizes: an IMP (516 or 316) will have 16K words, a TIP will have 28K words, and a TIP with the Magnetic Tape Option will have 32K words.

The larger TIP memory means the TIP must be enlarged to two cabinets. A site that expects trouble with the extra floor space should contact Hawley Rising at BBN.

Each network box gets a bigger memory. The biggest ones also need a second cabinet, so they need more room on the floor.

§3The Remaining Schedule

The dates were chosen to coincide with each site's usual monthly Preventive Maintenance, to cause the least user inconvenience. The work often needs the machine down longer than normal. Dates are given as month/day.

The remaining list runs from SRI on 3/7, ETAC and FNWC on 3/15, Rome on 3/16, UCLA on 3/19, AMES IMP on 3/21 and GWC on 3/22, through Carnegie on 4/4, SDC on 4/17, Illinois on 4/18 and UCSB on 5/1. Aberdeen is listed as postponed indefinitely. The author promises further RFCs if the schedule needs updating.

Each site gets a day on the calendar, usually the day its box is already being serviced. One site's day was put off with no new date.
