§1The August 1972 Statistics
RFC 391 is a short note from A. McKenzie dated 15 September 1972. Its abstract says it attaches the network traffic statistics for the month of August 1972. It updates RFC 378.
There is no protocol here, only the table.
A short note with a table showing how busy the network was in August 1972.
§2How the Table Is Laid Out
Each site such as UCLA, SRI, UTAH or BBN has one line per host. The columns are inter-node, intra-node, total, avg. daily internode and days. Sites with several hosts get a subtotal row.
Most sites show 31 days. Some report no traffic at all: TINK, MC CL and BELV are listed as having no traffic.
Each place gets a row, and the columns say how much was sent between computers, how much stayed inside one, and the totals.
§3Network Totals
At the bottom the table gives overall figures. The total is 21157570 internode and 8926549 intranode. The daily average is 682502 internode and 287953 intranode. The average per node-day is 23535 and 9929.
A last line gives packets per message (internode) as 1.09. The RFC does not explain the units further.
The bottom row adds everything up, so you can see how much the whole network handled in the month and on an average day.
