                     Information Management System
                     -----------------------------

We intend to build an Information Management and Statistical System
for the ILLIAC IV. It is intended to support various areas of research
whose problems are ILLIAC IV suited and whose data bases are large.

This System will include a user language and necessary manipulatory
routines for the ILLIAC IV. It will use the datacomputer for Archival
storage and provide the interface to the datacomputer for queries not
   ILLIAC suited.

PROBLEMThe ILLIAC IV supercomputer lacked adequate tools for managing and querying large datasets used in cutting-edge research.
MECHANISMThe proposal describes an Information Management and Statistical System with a user language and manipulation routines for the ILLIAC IV, leveraging the datacomputer for archival storage and handling queries not suited to the supercomputer.
RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTUREA specialized system designed to support research problems requiring high-performance computation on large databases.

§1ILLIAC IV Data Management

Researchers at the University of Illinois Center for Advanced Computation proposed an Information Management and Statistical System for the ILLIAC IV, one of the first supercomputers. The ILLIAC IV was suited to research problems involving intensive parallel computation on large datasets. The new system would provide a user language and necessary manipulation routines to enable this research.

Scientists wanted to build tools so the ILLIAC IV supercomputer could handle databases easily.

§2System Design and Storage

The proposed system would use the datacomputer, a specialized network resource, for archival storage of large datasets. The Information Management System would interface between the ILLIAC IV and the datacomputer, routing queries and data appropriately. Queries suited to the ILLIAC IV's parallel processing would run on the supercomputer, while other queries would use the datacomputer's resources.

The ILLIAC IV would handle fast calculations, and the network's datacomputer would keep and search through the big datasets.

§3Research Applications

The system was intended to support various areas of research whose problems benefited from the ILLIAC IV's speed and whose data bases were large. Dorothy Hopkin at the University of Illinois Center for Advanced Computation coordinated the development and invited interested researchers to contribute ideas or contact her for more information.

Different research groups could use this system if they had big datasets and problems that needed very fast calculations.
