Status of the Illinois Site (Response to RFC 0116)

As of the date of the report, 26 April, the Illinois Site has complete
operational hardware connecting the PDP-11 system with the IMP.

Due to much trouble with the Burroughs B6500 computer, final checkout
of the operating system plus the network control program for the
PDP-11 has been seriously curtailed. Current expectations are:

--checkout of the NCP by the latter part of May

--installation of the PDP-11 system in Paoli, PA (the operating
link between Illinois and Burroughs in Paoli) so that the system
       will be operational during June

PROBLEMRFC 116 asked for the status of the Illinois site on the network.
MECHANISMJ. Bouknight reports that the hardware connecting the PDP-11 system to the IMP is complete, but trouble with the Burroughs B6500 has slowed software checkout.
EXPECTED TIMELINENCP checkout was expected by the latter part of May and the system was expected to be operational during June.

§1Where the Illinois Site Stood

As of 26 April, the Illinois Site had complete operational hardware connecting the PDP-11 system with the IMP. The report is a response to RFC 116.

Final checkout of the operating system plus the network control program (NCP) for the PDP-11 had been seriously curtailed because of much trouble with the Burroughs B6500 computer.

The wires are connected and working, but the programs that use them are not finished being tested.

§2What Was Expected Next

Two expectations are listed. First, checkout of the NCP by the latter part of May. Second, installation of the PDP-11 system in Paoli, PA, which is the operating link between Illinois and Burroughs, so that the system would be operational during June.

They planned to finish testing by late May and move the machine to a partner location so it works in June.

§3Why a Status Note Mattered

The note has no protocol content. It is a snapshot of a site joining the early network, and it shows that connecting a host involved more than the IMP hardware: an operating system and an NCP also had to be working before the site could take part.

Plugging in is only the first step. The computer also needs the right programs before it can talk to others.
