                 Announcement of NGG meeting-JULY 16-17

The proposed NGG meeting date of 16-JULY-73 has been confirmed. The
meeting will be held at the University of Illinois on July 16 and 17.
An informal meeting will be held Sunday evening, July 15, to arrange
   the agenda.

The initial meeting place will be:

         Room 201, Advanced Computation Building

         1101 W. Springfield

         Urbana, Ill.

In the event that more space is needed, subsequent meetings may take
   place elsewhere.

James Michener suggests that those attending be sure to have read his
   RFC 493 on graphics protocols.

Local accommodations at Ramada Inn can be reserved by calling
(800)648-5970(their tool-free number) or the local Inn, (217)352-
7891. If you wish to make other arrangements, contact me and I will
   try to help.

Airline reservations can best be handled by your local airline
office. Jim suggested that I warn Ozark (the local service) of the
upcoming surge of non-student, non-standby passengers in the hopes of
getting better service. As Ozark is currently enjoying a pilot
strike, I have been unable to do this. Hopefully, it will be over in
a few days, but if it isn't, I recommend that you get the closest
flight you can and reserve a car for the rest of the way. This
probably will be resolved in time to avoid any hassle, but I thought
you would like to know about it just in case.

So that I will have a rough idea how much space we will need, let me
know, if possible, if you plan to attend.

I can usually be reached by calling (217)333-9354, preferably in the
afternoon. I will be gone July 2-6, so during that period, Nancy
Freece at (217)333-7161 will take your messages. Network mail will
be read earliest (also during JULY 2-6) if sent to user BUNCH at site
   USC-ISI. My mailing address is:

PROBLEMThe Network Graphics Group had scheduled a meeting and needed to announce the confirmed date, location, and logistics to the ARPANET community.
MECHANISMAn RFC was distributed announcing that the meeting would be held on July 16-17, 1973 at the University of Illinois, with an informal agenda session on Sunday evening July 15, plus details on lodging, transportation, and a reading assignment.
DISTRIBUTED ANNOUNCEMENTThe meeting was held as planned. The practice of using RFCs for meeting announcements became part of early ARPANET culture.

§1Network Graphics Group Meeting Confirmed

Steve Bunch of the Center for Advanced Computation at the University of Illinois announced that the Network Graphics Group (NGG) would meet on July 16-17, 1973, at the University of Illinois in Urbana. An informal agenda-planning session was scheduled for Sunday evening, July 15.

The initial meeting location would be Room 201 in the Advanced Computation Building at 1101 W. Springfield in Urbana, Illinois, with the option to move elsewhere if more space was needed.

The meeting was scheduled for two days in July in Illinois, with an extra evening to plan what to talk about.

§2Preparation and Reading Assignment

Bunch noted that James Michener, a fellow graphics researcher, recommended that attendees read his RFC 493 on graphics protocols before the meeting. This reading assignment helped prepare participants to discuss graphics protocol topics in depth.

Everyone should read one of the papers before arriving so they could talk about it together.

§3Travel and Accommodations

For lodging, Bunch recommended the Ramada Inn (reachable at a toll-free number 800-648-5970 or locally at 217-352-7891). Attendees who preferred other arrangements were invited to contact Bunch for assistance. For airline travel, Bunch suggested using local airline offices, but warned that Ozark Airlines (the local service) was in a pilot strike at the time, recommending attendees book the closest available flight and rent a car for the remainder of the journey if necessary.

He told people where to stay and warned that the local airline was on strike, so they might need to fly somewhere else and drive the rest of the way.

§4Contact Information and RSVP

Bunch asked attendees to let him know if they planned to attend so he could estimate space requirements. He provided his contact information: telephone 217-333-9354 (preferably in the afternoon), and noted he would be unavailable July 2-6. During that period, Nancy Freece at 217-333-7161 could take messages, and network mail sent to user BUNCH at site USC-ISI would be read earliest. His mailing address was also provided for those who preferred to correspond by post.

He asked people to call or write to say they were coming so he could book the right meeting room.
