Host Address Changes Involving RAND and ISI

This week the RAND IMP was temporarily removed from the
Network and a new IMP was installed at ISI. Some of the
people and computers from RAND have moved to ISI, in
particular the RAND TENEX is now the ISI TENEX. The address
of the ISI IMP is 86 (decimal) and the TENEX at ISI is Host
number one; thus the "Network Address" of the ISI TENEX is 86.
Sometime early next week the RAND IMP will be re-installed.
It will still be IMP number 7, and the IBM 360/65 at RAND will
   still be "Network Address" 7.

PROBLEMPeople and computers moved from RAND to ISI, and the RAND IMP was removed from the network for a time, so network addresses changed.
MECHANISMThe notice says a new IMP, number 86, was installed at ISI, where the former RAND TENEX is now Host number one and so has Network Address 86.
WHAT CHANGEDThe RAND IMP was due to be re-installed early the next week as IMP number 7, keeping address 7 for the IBM 360/65. RFC 405 is listed as updating this notice.

§1What Moved

This week the RAND IMP was temporarily removed from the network and a new IMP was installed at ISI. Some of the people and computers from RAND moved to ISI. In particular, the RAND TENEX is now the ISI TENEX.

A computer and some of its people moved from one place to another, and the network got a new connection point where they went.

§2The New Network Address

The address of the ISI IMP is 86 (decimal), and the TENEX at ISI is Host number one. So the Network Address of the ISI TENEX is 86. In this notice a host's Network Address is simply the number of the IMP it hangs off, taken as the address.

The new building has the number 86. Because the moved computer is the first one inside, its address is just 86.

§3The RAND IMP Returns

Sometime early the following week the RAND IMP will be re-installed. It will still be IMP number 7, and the IBM 360/65 at RAND will still have Network Address 7. Only the TENEX and its people changed place; RAND's other computer keeps the address it had.

The old building gets its connection back soon with the same number as before, so its remaining computer keeps its old address.
