(Graphics)Information form for the ARPANET Graphics
                          Resources Notebook:

Attached is a questionnaire about the state of graphics resources at
your site. As per the last Graphics Protocol Committee meeting, we
are attempting to compile such information for an ARPANET Graphics
   Resources Notebook.

Please complete the form and return it as soon as possible,
preferably as a NIC Journal entry (making it easier for us to
manipulate the information) to Dave Crocker (Nic Ident: DHC).

PROBLEMARPANET sites have different graphics hardware and capabilities, and nobody has a comprehensive list of what is available where for remote access.
MECHANISMDavid Crocker circulates a detailed questionnaire asking each site to describe its graphics experts, hardware, capabilities, network access procedures, and any limitations when used remotely.
BUILDING A RESOURCE INVENTORYResponses will be compiled into an ARPANET Graphics Resources Notebook so sites know where to find graphics services on the network.

§1Introduction

RFC 351 is a questionnaire from David Crocker (UCLA) created for the Network Graphics Working Group. The goal is to survey graphics resources across the ARPANET so that sites can discover what graphics hardware and services are available on the network.

As the ARPANET grows and more sites add graphics capabilities, a central inventory helps users and administrators understand the landscape and plan access to remote graphics systems.

A person is asking each school to say what drawing computers and tools they have. This will be collected into one big list so everyone knows who can help with graphics work.

§2Survey Questions

The questionnaire asks sites to provide:

  • Organization name and host number(s)
  • Local graphics experts (names and phone)
  • Graphics hardware installed
  • Local graphics capabilities and software
  • Differences in abilities over the network
  • Default settings when entering remotely
  • Graphics routines available remotely
  • Login procedures and process-initiation steps for network access
  • Attention/escape signals used
  • Demo account details and programs available
  • Additional interests and capabilities

The form asks: who works there, what hardware do you have, what programs run, how do you log in from the network, who can show it off, and anything special.

§3Submission and Compilation

Sites should complete the form and return it to David Crocker, preferably as a NIC Journal entry (for easy data processing). His mailing address is given at UCLA, c/o Jon Postel in the Computer Science Department. The responses will be compiled into the ARPANET Graphics Resources Notebook, which will document where graphics services can be found across the network.

Mail back your answers to the person listed, preferably in a computer format. All the answers will be put into a book listing everyone's graphics tools.
