RJE Protocol Meeting
There will be a meeting to discuss Remote Job Entry (RJE) protocols
in the ARPA Network on Friday 21 April 72. The meeting will be held from
9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in room 2412 of the Ackerman Student Union Build-
ing at UCLA.
Prospective attendees should contact Bryna Lang at (213) 825-2368
to confirm their attendance.
Attendees should also be familiar with the previous work on ARPANET
RJE protocols, in particular the reports by McKenzie (25 Feb. 72) and
Kampe (8 March 72) from the previous RJE meeting. Note that the Data and
File Transfer protocols are also relevant.

§1The RJE Working Meeting
On April 3, 1972, Jon Postel of UCLA announced a working meeting to discuss Remote Job Entry (RJE) protocols for the ARPANET. The meeting would be held on Friday, April 21, 1972, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Ackerman Student Union Building at UCLA.
Jon Postel called a meeting to talk about how computers could send jobs to each other on the network.
§2What the Meeting Covered
Attendees were expected to have read earlier reports on RJE work by Alex McKenzie (from February 25, 1972) and Kampe (from March 8, 1972) from a previous RJE meeting. The current meeting would also consider the Data and File Transfer protocols as relevant to RJE, since moving jobs and their results required reliable data transfer mechanisms.
People had to do homework first, reading what was said about this before. The meeting would also talk about how to move files, since that is part of sending jobs.
§3Participation
The RFC invited prospective attendees to confirm their attendance by contacting Bryna Lang at (213) 825-2368. This brief notice was a typical way the early ARPANET community coordinated protocol development, with working groups gathering to debate and agree on technical details.
People signed up to come by calling a number. It was how the early network fixed how computers should talk to each other.
