PROBLEMInternet service operators needed a way to coordinate operational matters and manage the growing global Internet infrastructure.
MECHANISMThe IEPG is an open forum of Internet Service Operators that meets to discuss operational issues, coordinate solutions, and exchange information on managing Internet services.
ACTIVE COORDINATIONThe IEPG became an important venue for operational coordination among Internet service providers, with open membership and publicly available meeting materials, archives and discussions.

§1The IEPG Forum

The Internet Engineering and Planning Group (IEPG) is a forum for Internet Service Operators to coordinate on operational matters. Geoff Huston founded it to help service providers manage the Internet infrastructure at scale.

The IEPG is not a standards-making body and does not conduct technical development work. Instead, it focuses on the operational and practical aspects of running Internet services and keeping networks connected.

The IEPG is a club of network operators who get together to talk shop: what works, what is broken, and how to keep the Internet running.

§2Goals and Membership

The group's primary goal is to promote a technically coordinated operational environment of the global Internet. The IEPG carries out three main activities: facilitating operations and management of Internet services, promoting the introduction of new Internet services, and maintaining liaison with other operational and technical development groups.

Membership is open to any individual. Anyone can subscribe to the IEPG mailing list at iepg-request@iepg.org, and all meeting announcements, agendas, and meeting reports are made publicly available. There is no membership fee or approval process.

Anyone can join. The group helps run Internet services, brings new services online, and talks to other groups doing similar work.

§3Archive and Communications

The IEPG maintains an archive of all materials at http://iepg.org/iepg, accessible via the World Wide Web. This archive makes the group's work and discussions available to the entire Internet community. The mailing list address is iepg@iepg.org.

By maintaining public archives and open meeting materials, the IEPG ensures that operational knowledge and coordination decisions are transparent and available to all Internet operators, not just those who can attend in person.

All the notes and meeting recordings go on the web for anyone to read, so operators everywhere can see what others are doing.
